It's 2019 and 66% of all relationships, start online. They start online, and now also grow online, predominantly on Chat platforms such as WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, Tinder etc.
When you Google romance on chat you will get hundreds of suggestions, even step-by-step guides, on how to hook, line and sinker the potential love of your life in the online dating world.
As a social study, we explore a few pointers on what constitutes good Chat Etiquette if you're looking to woo a potential partner on WhatsApp.
Proceed with Caution. These dos and donts are just general guidelines for your adventures in the online dating world. And always remember; in matters of heart terms and conditions always apply!
1. Listen and ask questions!
This is not an interview; so don’t make texting a means to an end! The greatest advantage of an online romance is that you can get to know each even before you see each other for the first time! So use this opportunity, listen to your potential partner and really get to know them!
2. GIFs are a great way to lighten the mood. Always.
So you’ve just started a conversation, and he/she cracked a hilarious joke. You don’t really have a witty response and texting back a laughing emoji is so passé and impersonal. So move on a little bit to the right on your emoji keyboard and there is your holy bible! There is a GIF for mood, every season and every situation right at the click of a button!
3. DO NOT use SMS language
Messages with purposeful typos are a real turn off unless you have travelled back in time to the early 2000s. Nobody wants to be texted by a date with a vocabulary of a 5th grader. So in future, refrain from ‘ howz lyf 4 u babez’ or ‘I love u 4eva’, because good grammar is the new sexy!
4. Definitely do not use Whatsapp’s predict text option
Unless incoherent babble is your thing now, its best to stay away from the predict text option! Take time and make intelligent conversation with your potential partner. A little effort goes a long way!
5. A profile picture speaks a 1000 words, so make it count!
If a picture speaks a 1000 words, then your profile picture is the first chapter to getting to know you. So really rethink that blurry shot from a wild night out, or that photo you took all the way back in high school! Let your profile picture be correlated to what your mirror actually reflects, lest your real self might not live up to your reel life.
6. Go easy on the emojis
Now its easy to get excited with all the emojis on the phone, but don’t get carried away with these cute (but no replacement to words) characters on your keyboard. You don’t want to be seeing only hundreds of emojis when you’re scrolling through your chat history.
7. Don’t play the waiting game
Are you waiting two days before you text your potential partner? Meanwhile you have sent a dozen screen shots of previews of his unread chats to your best friend? If your answer was yes to all of the above, congratulations! You are the latest victim of the infamous waiting game. Don’t let this purely theoretical dating tip come in the way of a potentially great conversation with your date. Keep calm and text your partner back!
